The
People's Choice:
Nominate a New Deadly Sin
We at
the Seven Deadly Sins Homepage
pride ourselves on our commitment to keeping alive the vital
historical tradition of the Seven Deadly Sins. But sometimes,
like the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, you wonder
if the people who framed the original concepts would have
felt differently if they could have peered into the future
and seen all the crazed goings-on in our age. In an time as
rich with sin and evil as ours, it seems that the Seven Deadly
Sins might need a little bit of updating.
This is your chance to
leave your mark on history and tamper with the doctrine of
over half a millenium! Add your personal Sin to the internationally-recognized
Seven! You
might be able to boast at parties and on dates that you stand
among the ranks of Popes and prominent conservative lawmakers
in your contributions to the legislation of morality!
To contribute,
send your sin and a brief explanation to: seven@deadlysins.com.
Entried may be edited for style, substance, humor, or the
hell of it. This list is updated at unpredictable intervals.
The
Entries
Despair
- This is a sin that has damned many a poor soul. No sin
cannot be forgiven if one repents. Despair is the sin that
prevents this chance at redemption and damns so many people
to lives of misery and pain. (contributed by Kevin Robinson)
Deception
- Sure, there are lies. I am talking about something different.
A thing so evil, so insidious, so subtle, and yet prevalent
in every sector of our society it is often overlooked. I
am talking about the Dark and Depraved art of Public Relations.
(contributed by Stephan Baer)
Watching
TV
- Really by this I mean spending much time at all on modern
mass media. It's unbelievably stupid, from TV to radio to
modern journalism. The modern mass media are weak, insipid,
puerile. They suck up to big business. Why else would TV
be advertising presciption drugs that are more dangerous
than the illegal kind?. (contributed by DW)
Keeping
busy - Once it was thought that idleness was the devil's
handmaiden. Now we have gone to the opposite extreme and
feel that we must be busy all the time. Keeping busy is
really a ruse to keep unpleasant thoughts at bay, or perhaps
thought in general. Because thought risks dissatisfaction,
including the thought: is this what I really want to be
doing with my life? Since the answer to this question is
usually no, we redouble our efforts to keep busy (contributed
by DW)
Whininess
- "Help, I'm being taken advantage of, and my self-esteem
is being trod upon by all those other sinners performing
all those other sins that I am somehow not empowered to
do myself. I can't help it - I'm just a victim! WHINE!!!"
(contributed by Roger Steckel)
Exploitation
- Using and abusing others to leapfrog yourself and your
ambitions over the backs of your peers -- and they are just
that, although exploitation diminishes us all. It is smallmindedness
and selfishness at its most vulgar. The more conscious the
exploitation, the deeper you go in Hell. (nominated by Steve
K.)
Sociopathy
- I take exception to an earlier entry nominating "Guilt".
Hell is a society soley occupied with those who are completely
devoid of conscience. I believe in justifiable guilt. (contributed
by a person with an extremely long anti-OJ nickname)
Shamelessness
- ala our President and Monica Lewinsky, neither of whom
seem to have any sense of shame (contributed by B. Colapietro)
Speed
and Falsehood - (no brief explanation, contributed
by Turtle Island Foods, Inc.)
Web
pages that
when printed fill up an entire sheet and then one line of
a new sheet
- Loggers must love that one! Why does it seem like almost
all web pages do this!?!? (contributed by Pastor Eric Krahmer)
Pusillanimity
(cowardice) - It invalidates the will, prevents positive
societal engagement and saps the time and energy of others
that feel a need to comfort and console the pusillanimous
individual. I believe cowardice, disguised as chic antipathy,
underlies the widespread societal estrangement exhibited
today in America. (contributed by Boris)
Overpopulation
- Sometimes I have a vision of Jesus as the Christ returning
to the planet. He sees humankind standing shoulder to shoulder
across the land yelling Hosanna! He inquires to the Archangel
on his left, "Where are my animals, my fields of grain,
my forests?" "Gone," replies the archangel, "They were
fruitful and multiplied!" "Don’t these people know when
enough is enough?" asks the Christ. "It was the only commandment
they ever paid any attention to." (contributed by John S.
Morgan)
Tolerance
- for it accepts and ignores the deadly sins in the world
refusing to shut it out allowing it to grow out of control
(contributed by Mel)
Addiction
- Anyone can become addicted to anything (contributed by
Mel)
Self-centeredness
- when individuals begin to think that they feel and operate
the same way and thus cannot figure why one would act in
a way seemingly "wrong" and odd, they begin to think of
ways to prevent such behavior, and thus attempt to mold
the world in their image, they wish to be god (contributed
by David Ludvig)
Limiting
the capacity and possibilities of the human mind - (no
brief explanation, contributed by David Ludvig)
Seeking
always familiarity - (no brief explanation, contributed
by David Ludvig)
Humanity
- Only humans have the ability to hate just because they
can. Todays society proves that humanity itself has created
a sin of itself. Its the only thing ever made that has the
intentions of breaking any and every rule there is for its
own personal, selfish gain. (contributed by Sacrifixx)
Effort
- Let's face it, we all hate doing stuff, especially things
which take energy. Therefore, it's wrong. Yep, wasting energy
is definately worthly of damnation. You've got no idea how
long it took me to dredge up the motivation to type this.
(contributed by Patrick Gallagher)
Pigotry
- The choosing of friends and lovers based on secret analyses
of their stock portfolios, penis and/or breast size, and
their vulnerability to psychological manipulation. The white-trash
version of pigotry features cross-referencing of checking
accounts, number and quality of intact permanent teeth,
and addiction to simple flattery. (contributed by Redietz)
Presidential
sucking - (no brief explanation - contributed by myk)
Harrassment - We talk about lust and power, but we
don't talk about the hurt that physical lust and lust for
power over others causes. Harrassment is one of the worst
things I can think of, because it not only hurts the person
harrassing, but it also hurts those around them. (contributed
by Erin Olsen)
Guilt -
If you do something, you shouldn't feel guilty about it. Guilt
can drive you to do a lot of things, mostly bad. Every body
is a sinner and everyone is guilty of SOMETHING!!! (contributed
by Rose Richardson)
Hypocrisy
- I would like to name specifically denounce trendiness, as
such denunciation is one of the trendiest things you can do
these days. (contributed by ThE tHrEE DOg kNiGhT)
Spamming
- (contributed by Lance and Doris)
Racism
- Nothing more needs to be said. (contributed by Sam B)
Manipulation
- Corrodes the soul and diminishes one's humanity by treating
human beings as objects. (contributed by Touch777@aol.com)
Jealousy/paranoia
- The cause of all the others. (contributed by DJK522@aol.com)
Euphoria
- Read any ancient church document, and the recurring theme
will be "pleasure is evil, pain is redemption." And now, with
this modern age, there are so MANY ways of reaching Euphoria..
Pharmaceutical drugs, ancient chanting rituals, Loud rythmic
music, even complicated computer light shows can "enhance
the mind." Unfortunately, I haven't experienced even a TENTH
of what's out there... (contributed by Jennifer Scheve)
Self-righteousness
- As in 'I am pro-choice but you better not choose to eat
animals!' (contributed by Sue Pattyn)
Road rage
- (contributed by horsnell@squirrel.com.au)
Indecision
- It's what holds up the line at Baskin Robbins; a triple-scoop
of french vanilla on a waffle cone or a double-chocolate cocoa-mocha
fudge sundae? It makes it so hard to pick a movie; Leonardo
di Caprio or Keanu Reeves? Geeze, what to wear to go out?
I look so good in everything! (contributed by Lee Menconi-Steiger)
Intolerance
- Certainly this one's been around for a long time, but the
last sixty years or so have seen the creation of far more
efficient systems, some quite subtle, some less than delicate,
for imposing the will of a righteous minority on the majority.
Here's just one example.
Willful Stupidity
- I'm certain we all work with someone who provides us with
daily insights into the tenacity with which some people can
deny reality.
Power -
Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. So
goes the maxim, and next thing you know... poof! It's a movie
title. Need we say more? (contributed by David L. Brzeczek)
Fear -
Personally, I'm afraid of a lot of things, including erratically-driven
cars, and guns held by people who don't like me. I like to
think that a little fear is conducive to the preservation
of life. But then, so is a little Lust. So here's fear. (contributed
by Jason Alan Cunningham)
